“Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes.”
– Edmond Dantes (The Count of Monte Cristo)
I thought I might throw you a curveball with this one. Inspiration can come from make-believe too! If you have never seen this one and you have an open mind, I highly recommend it. The Count of Monte Cristo story possesses thrill, excitement, adventure, betrayal, redemption, and my favorite, the importance of intellect.
I have to admit, the first time I saw this movie, I wasn’t a fan. I was more interested in action and adventure that involved guns and explosions. I didn’t grasp the concepts so I didn’t care for this and moved on. Then I watched it again when I was older and things made more sense. It ended up becoming one of my favorites. It wasn’t just entertaining. It was satisfying and enlightening.
It is about a poor man that has goodness in his heart, is well-intended, and sees the best in people, and just as things are starting to go well for him, everything is wrongfully taken from him. He is betrayed and loses his freedom, his family, and his love. Just as hope seems lost, chance shows itself, and through sheer will and deep determination, the tables start to turn.
It is about smarts, patience, cunning, planning, and seeing things through to the bitter end. Just like the quote states, everything may be one way at one moment, and change in an instant, but it is what we do when those changes happen that make all the difference.
