Inspiration of the Day #11

“I don’t know how I’m going to live with myself if I don’t stay true to what I believe.”
– Desmond Doss (Hacksaw Ridge)

The inspiration of today will come with a word of caution. This movie is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. Hacksaw Ridge is a movie that is based on a true story from World War II about the journey of a conscientious objector through childhood, basic training, and the battle that changed how people viewed him.

It is the account of a real soldier who enlisted and served in the Pacific during the Okinawa campaign. There was some intense and brutal fighting that the movie did a decent job showing, though any reasonable person should understand that war is something that Hollywood never truly captures.

Hacksaw Ridge is where a man that everyone labeled as a coward showed that you don’t need to be violent to be a hero. His fight was not with the Japanese or with those who disagreed with him. His fight was against disbelief and ridicule. His fight was against people trying to force the way they perceived war and how they believed it had to be conducted.

As the quote indicates, at the end of the day, the only one you have to live with is yourself and the question you have to ask is whether you are OK with yourself if you go against the things you believe. Just because it seems like there is only one way to do something does not make that the case. There is always another way and Desmond proved that.
