“Remember, kid, there’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you’ll never go wrong.”
– Babe Ruth (The Sandlot)
There are plenty of takeaways from The Sandlot. I remember when it first came out and I remember loving the movie for so many reasons. I was a sports fanatic and as a kid, it was awesome seeing a protagonist that I could, to an extent, relate to.
The Sandlot follows a kid who is the type of outcast that I think a lot of kids can relate to. He is socially awkward, doesn’t seem to be too street-smart, is a tad out of touch with the other kids his age, and doesn’t quite know where he fits in or belongs. The saddest part is that he knows it, but doesn’t seem to know what to do about it.
Something amazing happens and there is a shift for the better. The coolest and most athletic kid in the neighborhood notices him. He could, of course, disregard the outcast and move on, but he didn’t. What is the message?
You could be a decent human being and still be the coolest kid around. It glorified a humble, accepting, and charismatic approach to those who are different. It also inspired confidence and passion in the things you love, whether it be sports, writing, or anything that you consider to be your true calling. The Sandlot is a classic and one of the most quoted movies ever made.
