Inspiration of the Day #23

“Manners are a way of showing other people we care about them.”
– Adam (Blast from the Past)

I remember when this movie came out. I also remember not having much interest in seeing it. That was a big mistake. I recently saw Blast from the Past for the first time and I was actually surprised at how entertaining and enjoyable it was. Even now, almost 25 years later, it is still a fun movie.

Blast from the Past is an interesting take on a clash between eras of the same culture. Could you imagine what it would be like to be raised in the “Leave it to Beaver” time period and then be exposed to current society? It isn’t the largest time gap, but the differences are enough to create some entertaining situations.

It also makes you wonder. In Blast from the Past, Brendan Fraser’s character is raised in an environment that is isolated from the cultural evolution that took place over 30 years and emerges oblivious to the ways of the world around him. But wait! It gets better.

He brings with him the values and the teachings provided by his parents that are based on 1960s American suburban society. Sure, there is a lot of culture shock, but simple things like manners, courtesy, respect, clean language, and wholesome fun are brought to the screen in a way that almost makes you wish there were more people like his character in the real world.

Skip past the wonderful cast, creative writing, and beautiful performance, and focus on the lesson to be learned. Blast from the Past shows us that you can be nice, decent, respectful, loving, caring, and still be cool. I definitely recommend this movie. It isn’t just fun. It is clean and educational.
