“Sometimes the correct path is the tortured one.”
– Ali (Draft Day)
I don’t know what it is about sports, but they happen to be one of the better examples of following your dreams and never giving up. Draft Day, while not really spending a lot of time on the actual playing of football, is no exception. It is mainly about the first of several of the most important days in an athlete of the sports life.
Draft Day follows the manager of what I feel is easily agreed upon to be one of the “lesser” football franchises in the entire sport. I am not saying that I personally feel they are the worst team in football…..but……it is pretty hard to argue with what we have all seen and heard throughout the history of football. They are professionals and they have had some very talented players and staff, but there is no memorable history that I am aware of.
That doesn’t change what I believe about football, sports, or dreams in general. Magic happens. The underdogs sometimes take the day. Miracles happen. Just because something has seemed to be the case for a long time, doesn’t make it an indefinite fact. You don’t know what you don’t know. Sometimes, the impossible actually means “I’m possible.”
You add in fantastic writing, professional guidance, and an all-star cast, and the resulting product is a movie like Draft Day. I am a Kevin Costner fan and even if you take him out of the picture, the rest of the cast was still pretty impressive. The execution was also top-notch. It was entertaining, educational, and a heartfelt reminder that there is so much more to football, and all sports, than what takes place on the field during those tense 60 minutes.
I also happen to enjoy football. I would not consider myself to be a die-hard fan, but even I found Draft Day to be an eye-opening experience. I never thought to consider the behind-the-scenes effort to make a football team, but it is hard to argue with what the movie displays. Even though it was made to entertain and make money, there is no denying that they likely got things fairly accurately. I highly recommend for anyone that enjoys football or believes in that passions surrounding a dream.
