Inspiration of the Day #30

“You had the courage to dream. In spite of your obvious and astonishing limitations, you never gave up on that dream.”
– Mr. Chetty (The Internship)

I know that this movie was not considered a success, but that rarely seems to matter. I find that I often enjoy movies that are considered unsuccessful or critical failures. I feel like it is a shame that The Internship falls in this category. This movie was so much more impactful than I think people realize.

The Internship follows 2 older gentlemen that are down on their luck and metaphorically circling the drain. Neither has a college degree or any formal education beyond the bare minimum. Combine that with their age, and then mix in the hiring climate of the 21st century………their career prospects are not looking so good. They are face-to-face salesmen in a world of internet sales.

That is why I love The Internship so much. Sure, it is more standard issue Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson comedy, but I believe there are some very relevant and inspirational messages sprinkled throughout. Look beyond some of the dirty humor and you will see some things that might not seem so out there. Outcasts in an environment with perceived norms are the target of mistreatment and abuse. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

The message from The Internship is “None of that matters.” If you have a dream, you are responsible for it. You have to be ready for challenges. You might not be able to anticipate where those challenges will come from, but if you keep pushing forward, anything is possible. If you dare to dream, you are only halfway there. You have to have to courage to pursue that dream, no matter the adversity.

Another message, and probably my favorite, is to ask for help when you need it. You don’t have to do it alone. It is ok to ask for help. It is ok to accept the help that is offered. Life is hard enough. You don’t need to make it harder. Ask for help when you need it. I promise it’s ok
