“On a quest, the right way isn’t always the easy one.”
– Barley (Onward)
I was overly fond of this movie, but I would be lying if I said there weren’t some fantastic moments. It definitely has the feel of most PIXAR movies and doesn’t disappoint. Onward was entertaining and a unique idea for a quest that I wasn’t expecting, but still enjoyed. There was plenty of comedy and action and the graphics, as usual, were spot on.
Onward follows a pair of brothers that are essentially opposites. One is uptight and book-smart, the other is carefree and optimistic. They have a chance to spend one last day with their deceased father, but things don’t go according to plan. They are forced to embark on a quest that will challenge them and take them both out of their comfort zones.
Most importantly, Onward is a journey about seeing your perceived world from a new and different perspective. I will not spoil further, but I will say that I empathize with the concept that sometimes, we need to go on a journey that takes us far away just so we can truly realize what was right in front of us the whole time. Seeing reality from a different perspective.
Onward also shows us the power of belief. Whether it is a belief in something real or fictional, it is important to believe in something. Belief in magic, religion, family, fantasy, or whatever else, can take you on a beautiful journey that you never thought possible. It all leads to creativity and creativity can lead to progress.
