Inspiration of the Day #42

“The best reason to carry a handkerchief is to lend it.”
– Ben (The Intern)

This was another surprise to me. The Intern is not the type of movie I typically enjoy, but I have been keeping a much more open mind as of late. It is definitely not your typical Robert De Niro movie, but I have to admit, this one still worked for me. It is movies like this that prove he is one of the greatest in the film industry.

The Intern follows a widower that is over the hill, retired, and bored. He has tried a multitude of various ways to keep busy, but nothing seems to be working for him. Not in a bad way, but in a way that is indicative that he needs more in his life than the slow wait for death. What does he do? He decides to become a 70-year-old intern for an internet marketing company. Makes sense right?

It goes about the way you might expect. Actually, it doesn’t. Sure, there is some comic situations that follow with an elderly man trying to navigate as an intern for an internet marketing company that sells woman’s clothing, but there is more to it than that. The Intern takes a veteran blue-collar worker and introduces him to a modern work environment, and then highlights many of the differences, good and bad, between the two generations.

What I love most about The Intern is Ben’s sensible, realistic, hardworking, and understanding nature. He is a perfect gentleman and he positively influences everyone around him. His nature and work ethic create a better working environment and he is a living example that there is more than one way to be popular and cool.

I took the lessons from this movie to heart. I actually try to carry a handkerchief whenever I go out now and I have to tell you…..I highly recommend you do the same. The enjoyment doesn’t come from its necessity. The enjoyment comes from the appreciation for the person you lend it to. If you need it, I give you permission. You can be cool and care about things at the same time.
