“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.”
– Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)
I remember the first time I picked up a Harry Potter book. I couldn’t put it down. It was so unique and entertaining that it was the first time I had ever finished reading a book that size so fast. I remember when they announced they would be turning it into a movie. I wasn’t old enough yet to understand that this was typically risky because movies are never quite as good as books.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was no different, but it was still mind-blowing, and the beginning of a ten-year magical journey for the world. It wasn’t just the movies that were fun to watch, it was also the fact that we got to follow this young group of actors on their journey into the world of witchcraft and wizardry. What a wild ride.
The special effects weren’t perfect, but that didn’t make the ride any less enjoyable. The acting wasn’t super great, but they are a bunch of children and clearly having a great time. You can generally tell when a movie was fun to make. there is the feeling you get watching the characters that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was fun to create and it makes for a more enjoyable movie experience.
I also enjoyed the fact that all these young aspiring actors got to experience and learn from some of the greatest in the industry. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone gives us Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Robbie Coltrane, John Hurt, and so many other greats that it seemed inevitable that this movie franchise would be a success. I am a sucker for a story with a good positive message and this movie delivers.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a story about hardship, love, family, and friends. Things don’t always go according to plan. Life is not always fair. Sometimes that deck is stacked against you. You can either complain or do something about it. When you realize you don’t have to do it alone, it becomes easier. You can ask for help. Love and family win the day and the moment we stop believing that is the moment we have lost.
