Inspiration of the Day #57

“Sometimes if you want to succeed, you have to do what they tell you.”
– Cassie Munroe (RV)

Fun story about this movie. I have actually had a copy of it for many years. It came in a pack with a movie that I wanted and the pack was cheaper than buying the movie on its own. I never watched it because I thought it looked dumb and the concept was not of much interest to me. What a mistake that was. I saw RV for the first time at the loving behest of my wife and absolutely loved it.

RV follows a financially well off family that has sort of lost touch with each other, even though they live in the same house. No one is on the same page and it is obvious. They are about to depart on a vacation to the tropics when the father’s (Robin Williams) is forced into a situation of having to be somewhere else for work. In an attempt to compromise, he rents an recreational vehicle and tries taking his family on a cross country trip.

What follows is among the funniest adventures I have ever witnessed. The cast absolutely crushed it, there is some minor action and adventure, and just when you think they are getting the hand of it, something new and disastrous transpires. RV, I would argue, is easily one of the more underrated movies of all time. What might seem like a complete dud, is actually cinematic and comedic gold of epic proportions.

RV also has a grand nugget of wisdom. Do not misunderstand the quote because by itself, it is entirely out of context. It was at the moment this quote appeared, that the true wisdom took place. Decisions were made and it was clear that success is much more complicated than doing a job or owning a business. There are nuances that transcend the black and white nature of a yes or no question.

I encourage you to give this movie a chance. If you don’t get any inspirational messages by the end, that is understandable. I promise though, you will laugh by the end, and there can be just as much value in a hearty laugh.
