Inspiration of the Day #58

“The main thing about money, Bud, is that it makes you do things you don’t want to do.”
– Lou Mannheim (Wall Street)

Wall Street is another Charlie Sheen movie that is not classified as a comedy but was still impressive. For most people, any movie about the stock market doesn’t have the most appealing sound to it. How can you make numbers and business deals entertaining on screen? Simple. You take a fantastic cast and add in a story that makes it relevant to any white or blue-collar working person.

This wasn’t a movie strictly about the market, but Wall Street definitely lived up to its name by showing the potential for morality bending and greed when you add the possibility of “easy money” into the mix. It is truly amazing watching what can be done with numbers and information. Most people don’t realize how dangerous that combination can be, especially when you add greed and a lack of morality to the mix.

So why is Wall Street inspirational? How is this worthy of notice? For me, it is the story. It is seeing a guy that any of us could possibly relate to, being put in a situation where he gets a taste of the high life and ends up at a crossroads between what is easy, and what is right. He could choose to take the easy street and become rich, and powerful, and have complete control over his life, but it would come with a significant cost.

I loved the movie Wall Street because it shined a light on a very real culture that we encounter every day. The choice between right and easy. This doesn’t mean that the easy route is going to be wrong or bad. It just means that you should use your best judgment. If something is going to be easy, just make sure you can live with the consequences.
