“I saw him wreck a $100,000.00 boat because he liked the splash.”
– Catherine Banning (The Thomas Crown Affair)
I thought that The Thomas Crown Affair was going to be just another romantic movie with the 1990’s sprinkled throughout the entire film. I was quite wrong, and happily so. Turns out, it was actually a very unique heist movie, and who doesn’t like a good heist movie? Especially with a little romance and mystery along the way.
It was hard for me to watch any Pierce Brosnan movie from this era without expecting James Bond. I thought he was a decent James Bond and it was difficult for me to see him in any other role. The Thomas Crown Affair was a decent segway into different roles for him and I fear I did not give it the credit it deserved until I was much older.
The Thomas Crown Affair depicts an insurance investigator that specializes in theft recovery following a very rich and bored businessman that was looking for a new thrill. What ensues is an ongoing comedic and entertaining series of misdirection and an intellectual battle that keeps everyone guessing until the very end. Filled with a fantastic cast and an arsenal of great dialogue, this is a movie I recommend.
Again, I do not now, nor ever, encourage the dangerous, illegal, or criminal activity of any kind. That said, what I love most about The Thomas Crown Affair is not the actual heist. It is about the adventure, both physical and intellectual, that takes place. The main character is a man that can afford everything, yet it seems like he has nothing. No happiness, joy, or thrill, and all he is looking for is something exciting.
He embarks on this journey for the sake of excitement and ends up getting something even more valuable than anything tangible. It makes you wonder what would be so important to you that would give cause to risk everything, including freedom, in order to obtain it. Is it fun or excitement? Is it a specific experience? Is it love? Only you can answer.
