Inspiration of the Day #65

“Memory is the scribe of the soul.”
– Max Vandenburg (The Book Thief)

I know that Aristotle said it first, but this is my blog about movies and it was said in the movie The Book Thief by one of the main and most important characters. Fair warning, this movie is another that is not for the faint of heart. It is not based on a true story, but it is full of elements of truth.

The Book Thief is what it sounds like. It is about a thief that steals books. During a time when owning certain books was a crime and the punishments were potentially severe, this young girl risked everything for what some might consider nothing. The people were starving, the environment was dangerous for all, and the overall situation was bleak.

The Book Thief is based on a book written by Markus Zusak and the movie creators did a decent job of sticking to the source material. It was an incredible cast, well executed, and overall, believable. Even though it was fiction, in both the book and movie, there were plenty of incidents where similar situations took place in real life.

During one of the darkest and most evil times in human history, there were those that risked everything for what was right. The Book Thief was not the type of movie that I would personally consider to be rewatchable, but I do believe that everyone should read the book and/or watch the movie at some point.
