Inspiration of the Day #66

“She’s safe, just like I promised. She’s all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we’re all men of our word really… except for, of course, Elizabeth, who is in fact, a woman.”
– Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)

Pirates of the Caribbean is another of my favorite movies that I was lucky enough to see in theaters. I did enjoy some of the sequels, but it was the first that is the one I appreciate most. It was funny, entertaining, and an experience I will never forget. It is movies like this that are rewatchable and can be enjoyed almost as much the 15th time as it was the first.

I remember hearing about it before it came out. I remember I wanted to see it, but I wasn’t dying to. It was based on a ride at Disneyland and at the time, I was a teenage boy that didn’t really care much for anything Disney. Pirates of the Caribbean was a major game-changer. Not just for me, but for a lot of people.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Johnny Depp prior to Pirates of the Caribbean, but this performance opened my eyes to his talent. It also opened my eyes to the progressive and innovative nature of the Disney corporation and for that, I am grateful. It was a great message to the world’s youth and though it is not based on reality, it is still a fun fictional look into the time period.

What message did Disney send? Pirates of the Caribbean was a beacon to all stating that you can be a business for kids and still be cool. Sometimes, it is simple messages that can have a complex and widespread impact. Plus, who doesn’t love a good adventure movie?
