Inspiration of the Day #73

“There’s not many good guys left, that’s all. We have to watch out for the bad guys. We have to just… keep carrying the fire.”
– The Man (The Road)

The Road is one of the brightest dark movies I have ever seen. Brace yourself. There is not much action to be had, but there is a different type of suspense than I have ever seen in any other movie. The plot was simple, but at the same time, it was incredibly complicated. This is another movie with more questions than answers, but sometimes, that is a good thing.

If you weren’t aware, The Road was based on the best-selling novel that was written by the late Cormac McCarthy. The book is one of my favorite books ever written and while Hollywood did what it always does, I am pleased to say that they did not deviate too far from the original source material. It was a stunning recreation of a phenomenal story.

The Road takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and follows a man and his son as they travel toward the ocean. We don’t know what happened, but we know that the world as we know it no longer exists and they are on a journey. Food and water are scarce, the environment is harsh, and there aren’t many good or decent people left. During a situation like this, who do you trust? How can you be sure? What do you do?

What I love most is that The Road is not your typical post-apocalyptic movie. There is no action, aliens, zombies, viruses, uprisings, etc. The whole movie surrounds the concept of decency and love. The love between a father and son. The decency to do what is right, even if it is difficult or dangerous. I encourage everyone to give the book a try first, but if not, the movie is a great alternative.
