Everyone deserves a good laugh every now and then. Comedy shows are great and can be a lot of fun and if you aren’t wanting to get dressed up to go out, I always have suggestions. I enjoy plenty of the newer comedies, but I love taking a few steps back and viewing a classic from when I was a kid, for me, there are few better, funnier, more entertaining films than Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
I still remember the first time I saw Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. We rented it from the movie store, ordered pizza, had my Diet Coke, and spent the next hour and a half laughing hysterically with my friend. Say what you want about the man, but Jim Carrey was the golden standard for comedy movies when I was growing up and this was his best work.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was so out there in terms of comedy and plot that it was unlike anything I had ever seen. Granted, I was a youngster with minimal movie exposure and a short attention span, but that didn’t change the fact that I have been quoting this movie for almost 30 years, as I am sure many of you have done the same.
I loved the sequel even more, but this was the movie that set it up. I know this wasn’t his breakout role, but for me, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was my first Jim Carrey experience, and it set the stage for the enjoyment of many more of his projects. Because of this movie, I have been able to enjoy many of his other works and spent a lifetime knowing that no matter what, there is a Jim Carrey movie always available if I need a laugh.
That is the inspiration behind a comedy. Not just the idea of comedy, but the great feeling that comes with a hearty and healthy laugh. Laughter is medicinal. Therapeutic. Something we all need from time to time. Best of all, this movie is not trapped in its place in history. It is as funny today as it was when it came out.
