“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and SNAP! The job’s a game.”
– Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins)
The sequel wasn’t bad, but like many cases, it was not the original Mary Poppins. I love Emily Blunt and the rest of the cast in the sequel was great, including the cameo by Dick Van Dyke. The original just holds a special place in everyone’s hearts and cinematic history. Even the story behind getting the movie created was made for a film of its own.
Mary Poppins was initially based on a book series by author P.L. Travers. This is a book series I have recently obtained but have not yet read. but I look forward to it. P.L. Travers, from what I understand, was a fantastic author, but she was not the most friendly or cooperative. Hard to blame her when you see what the movie industry tends to do to books.
It is difficult to imagine life without Mary Poppins. There are so many instances of everyday life when you hear a quote from it or one of the songs comes on briefly and your mind automatically goes through the rest. It is tough to accept that there was a time when it didn’t seem like the movie would ever get made due to ongoing conflict and disagreements between Disney and Travers.
The fact that it got made was a testament to Walt Disney’s tenacity and no-quit attitude. He was a visionary and he knew how to get things done and follow his dreams. Mary Poppins took more than 20 years to make and he never gave up, despite everything working against him. He had a goal, knew it wouldn’t be easy, and persisted until the very end. That, and this movie as its symbol, are worthy of great admiration and respect.
