Inspiration of the Day #82

“Rescue the damsel in distress, kill the bad guy, and save the world.”
– Rick O’Connell (The Mummy)

I am well aware that things in life are almost never this simple, but that is one of the great things about books and movies. It is a world that doesn’t always rely on fiction or obey the laws of physics. Growing up, The Mummy was one of my favorite movies. I always loved a good treasure-hunting adventure, but there was something special about this one.

The Mummy wasn’t just action or just adventure. There was a little of everything. There was history, comedy, romance, horror (depending on your interpretation of what is “scary”), and a lot more fun than any like movie that had come before it. It was written well, had an excellent cast, and is one of the most rewatchable movies I have ever seen.

The Mummy is another one of those movies that, while not the most factually accurate, took a subject that is not the most popular (history) and made it both interesting and fun. There is also some fantastic dialogue that was fantastic for your friendly quoting banter with friends. I also loved the morality and values that the movie instilled in its audience.

This was the first time I heard of any movie that talked about people of the desert in the way that it did. The Mummy addressed something that I had not considered prior to watching it. Values are more complicated than any system of metrics can measure.

These are desert people. They value water, not gold. This was the scene that made me first consider that there is more that goes into values than a dollar sign. It also points out that just because you value something, doesn’t mean others value the same thing.
