“Everyone is born, but not everyone is born the same. Some will grow to be butchers, or bakers, or candlestick makers. Some will only be really good at making Jell-O salad. One way or another, though, every human being is unique, for better or for worse.”
– Narrator (Matilda)
More light-hearted and wacky fun. Inspiration can from from any place and at any time. I remember seeing Matilda when I was younger and thinking how cool it would be to have powers. I also loved how much the main character was into books and education. Growing up, I had mixed feelings about school, but over time, I realized how great it was.
It is movies like Matilda where a simple concept, like reading or math, can be displayed in a new and interesting manner that, rather than being frowned upon or scoffed at, are symbols of being cool. Sure, there are those who would view her character as a dork or nerd, but to an open mind, she was the popular and cool kid that people liked and wanted to be friends with.
One of the things I love most about Matilda is that it is great for all ages. It is one of the most family-friendly movies that also has a few tense or scary-ish moments, but it is alright. It is a kid’s movie, but there are lessons for everyone. Love, empathy, compassion, and intelligence win the day while hate, jealousy, and greed are the path to loneliness.
