“The world’s a playground. You know that when you are a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.”
– Allison (Yes Man)
I was not expecting such a profound movie when I walked into the theater to see Yes Man for the first time. It is a Jim Carrey movie. Yes, I know that he has done a few serious roles, but it is not his usual work. This was still a very funny movie and had several Jim Carrey-worthy moments, but there were also several profound messages throughout the film.
Yes Man is about a middle-aged guy that has resigned himself to what many of us view as a typical life in adulthood. Go to work, go home, pay the bills, and stay within the lines of social normalities. No risks taken, not much fun had, and the wall surrounding our comfort zone is reinforced each day by the meaning and attitude surrounding the word “No.”
But what if, one day, you make a commitment to the word and attitude of “Yes.” What if you decided to say “yes” instead of “no” to at least one thing per day that you know there was a time you would have said “yes?” What if you decided to say yes to everything (within the law of course) to every opportunity that presented itself? That is what Yes Man is all about.
I have no idea what a day, a week, a year, or even a lifetime of this would look like, but the movie Yes Man shows us what it could look like. Is it practical? Maybe not. Then again, maybe it is? How would you know if you haven’t tried? I will tell you what you can do. You can give this movie a watch and at least enjoy watching one of the funniest people in Hollywood history give it a go in a dream version of what could be possible.
