Inspiration of the Day #99

“You want to see a miracle? Be the miracle.”
– God (Bruce Almighty)

That is right. I am hitting everyone with another Jim Carrey movie. Why? Because I chose it that is why. Bruce Almighty was another one of his projects that was one of his better comedy movies that ended up morphing into a story about life choices and identifying personal values. You don’t typically expect motivation or profound messages when you watch a Jim Carrey movie, but somehow, you almost always end up getting one.

Bruce Almighty follows a troubled middle-aged reporter who is dissatisfied with the circumstances in his life and is so blinded by what he wants that he doesn’t see what he already has. He is so disgruntled and angry about his life situation that he can’t see beyond his anger to the fact that he has it so much better than so many others. So what happens?

Well, it is not called Bruce Almighty because he rolls over and gives up. He demands help from the Heavens and God, played by Morgan Freeman, thinks it might be entertaining to oblige. What follows is exactly what you might expect. What happens when you give a very funny and angry person the power of God? You get laughter on a grand scale. This is easily one of his funniest movies of all time.

The important thing is that it doesn’t stop there. Bruce Almighty is about more than watching the funny antics of a down-and-out anchor using the power of God to give himself the life he thinks he deserves. The more he abuses the power to give himself the things he wants, the more he loses the things he loves. He gets so wrapped up in thinking that limitless power and wealth can fix his problems, he misses the damage he is causing.

The message I take is that power and money can be a lot of fun, but it is what you truly place value on that matters most. Is something valuable because it is just given to you? Or is the value placed in what it took to earn things? I am not just talking about love. I am talking about asking yourself the important questions. What is valuable to you? Why is it valuable? What would you be willing to do to get it?
