“Destiny. It belongs to the underdogs.”
– Dick Vermeil (American Underdog)
I thought, for my 100th post, I would return to the movie that started this journey toward inspirational quotes from movies. American Underdog is not my all-time favorite movie, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it almost every day. I am not a fan of the Rams, nor was I ever a big fan of Kurt Warner. For me, it is all about the 49ers. That said, I am also open-minded enough to recognize what Kurt Warner and his story represents.
American Underdog isn’t just a football story. Football is at the center, sure, but that is not the theme. The theme is about having a dream. Not just a fantasy, but a dream. Something that gives you your reason for being. For existing. For living. The dream that fills your heart with love that you are able to share with others. It is about knowing what you want and never letting anyone tell you that you can’t have it.
I am also not a huge fan of many of the cast members but it seemed to me like everyone put in a commendable effort and did the real people justice. For me, American Underdog is a reminder that no matter what anyone says, no matter how stacked the deck is against you, if you want something bad enough and are willing to put in the work, you can have it.
