Inspiration of the Day #111

“We just found Sydney, We’ve got it. It’s absolutely crystal clear. She’s sitting upright in a small debris field. There’s no doubt about it. The Prime Minister or anybody else can announce it. We have found HMAS Sydney.”
– David Mearns (The Shipwreck Hunter)

The Shipwreck Hunter is a different sort of inspirational experience. You don’t necessarily have to be a history enthusiast to love the concept, but it definitely serves to make the experience more enjoyable. It is not quite a treasure hunter type of book, but it is about as close to it as you can get without any gold or other riches at the end of the journey.

It was definitely not my favorite book, but there were several historical instances that I found to be fascinating. The lifestyle of a persona in this position was also not quite what you see in the movies or read in your regular treasure books. The Shipwreck Hunter was more about the things that you don’t know about that take place when looking for a lost ship.

The Shipwreck Hunter spent a lot of time talking about the research and the lobbying that takes place when trying to put together an expedition. We all know about how Columbus discovered the New World, but how much do we really know about what it took to put that expedition together in the first place. The negotiating, the fundraising, the recruitment, the research, the planning, the training, the list goes on.

If you have an interest in things lost at sea or in the investigative process that goes into finding a lost ship, The Shipwreck Hunter is a great source. I can’t say it is a book that is difficult to put down, but I can say that it is a book that is filled with mystery and intrigue and is based on real events in human history.
