“Remember, mate, not all sharks are in the water.”
– Adventure (The Pagemaster)
This is one of those movies that were truly pieces of art. The Pagemaster came during a time when television was getting into overdrive, cinematic technology was improving at a rapid rate, and theaters were still the place to be to see a movie. Especially a movie as unique as this one.
The Pagemaster is a live-action, cartoon mash-up that follows a young boy on the adventure of a lifetime. Imagine a kid that is afraid of everything that is forced into a situation to face just about…..everything. Horror, fantasy, adventure, this book is filled with just about everything a youngster of the 90s would absolutely love. Best of all, in my opinion, is what the movie champions.
Books. Reading. The adventures that take place in the text are imagined on the big screen while also paying tribute to the importance of the written word. The Pagemaster is an adventure worth taking and also happens to be family-friendly. Best of all, it is not super long. This 1 hour 20 minute movie will not use up much of your day and is well worth the ride.
Lastly, The Pagemaster also sports an impressive cast. Christopher Loyd, Whoopie Goldberg, Macaulay Culkin, Sir Patrick Stewart, and a host of others come together to create a short but fun movie that takes you from the book pages, to the big screen, and back to the pages. Action, horror, fantasy, adventure, and even a little comedy can all be found in this brief, but entertaining masterpiece.
